Furnished flat, hotel or guest room: how to choose accommodation for three weeks of thermal cure in Luxeuil-les-Bains, and the five criteria that actually matter.
Three weeks is neither a weekend nor a move. It is exactly the length at which a flat’s shortcomings become intolerable — and exactly what nobody thinks about when booking.
The four options
A furnished let. The majority choice among cure guests, and by a wide margin. A whole flat, a kitchen, a washing machine, a weekly or three-weekly rate. Cheapest beyond ten days, and the only option that lets you live normally.
A hotel. Comfortable, nothing to maintain, but the arithmetic hurts over twenty-one nights, and you get neither kitchen nor laundry.
An aparthotel. In between, on both cost and character.
A room in someone’s home. Economical, sometimes very warm, but you share the kitchen and bathroom — demanding over three weeks with an early treatment schedule.
The five criteria that matter
1. Walking distance to the baths
Consistently underestimated. You will walk it daily for eighteen days, early, often with wet hair and damp skin — including in March and November, when it is five degrees in Luxeuil. A kilometre looks reasonable on a map; it is fifteen minutes each way, eighteen times, in the cold.
Be wary of listings that quote a distance “by car” or say “5 minutes from the baths” without saying how. Ask for the distance in metres and the exact address, and check a map yourself.
2. A washing machine in the flat
You come back with wet swimwear and towels every single morning — a wash every two or three days. A launderette across town turns that into a daily chore. Insist that the machine is inside the flat, not in a shared laundry room. A tumble dryer matters too: at the start and end of the season, nothing dries by itself in Luxeuil.
3. No stairs
Many guests come for a rheumatology cure. Two floors without a lift, once a day carrying shopping, is enough to spoil a stay. Ask plainly: how many steps between the street and the flat? An owner who answers “very few” without a number is hiding something.
4. A kitchen that actually works
“Equipped kitchen” means everything and nothing. Check for an oven, a microwave and a decent-sized fridge. You will cook around twenty meals.
5. The full price, written in advance
Ask for the total for your exact dates, everything in: rent, utilities, linen, cleaning, tourist tax, deposit. A good question: “What will I pay in total, from 4 to 25 May, for two people?” If the answer is not a single figure, press.
Questions to ask before booking
- What is the exact address, and how many metres from the baths?
- How many steps to get in?
- Is the washing machine inside the flat or shared?
- Are linen and towels provided, and are the beds made on arrival?
- Is there parking, and is it included?
- What is the total for my dates, all in?
- Do you provide an itemised invoice for the stay?
That last one matters if you are covered by the French system: your fund will want a named, dated invoice, and not every private landlord issues one unprompted.
When to book
As soon as the baths confirm your treatment dates. For May, June and September, four to six months ahead is not excessive. In March, April, October and November, availability lasts much longer and rates are gentler.
